How to shop for carpet

Carpeting adds a touch of elegance and luxury to any home, but it's essential to choose the right one. Buying floor covering isn't something we often do, and it's a significant investment in your home, so you want to get it right! It's easy to get overwhelmed because the choices are vast, so here are four tips that will simplify matters for you.

Explore your lifestyle

You should do this even before you step into the carpet store. Determine budget, style, size of family, kids, pets, and any special requirements, such as extra stain resistance and durability or needs for pet-friendly, hypoallergenic or sustainable versions. Also, look at the room you plan to install; whether it's small and dark or large and airy will make a difference in what you choose.

Know how to determine the quality

Density, not weight, determines the quality and refers to how closely the yarns are tufted together. Density is on the label; it should be between 3500 and 5,000.

Twist means how many times a longer fiber is twisted per inch; that number, too, is on the label and should be at least four, but sometimes will go as high as eight. The higher the number, the more durable.

Understand the importance of padding

Padding protects the rug from the bare floor and will keep the carpet looking great and performing well for a long time. Seek the advice of the flooring expert to determine the proper padding for your rug, as some can be too thick and cause damage.

They may look and feel the same but still be different

That's especially true if you get quotes from other stores. When comparing, be sure the rugs have the same fiber, style, grade, and warranty.
